#Hairartist: Get to know Global Editorial Ambassador Tyler Johnston

In order to innovate, Schwarzkopf Professional truly believes in collaboration. Which is why they choose to work closely with a number of highly regarded hairdressers from across the industry, including famed session stylist, Tyler Johnston (@tylerjohnstonhair) who is Global Editorial Ambassador.

Like many renowned hair artists, Tyler began his distinguished career at Vidal Sassoon. This was during the eighties when the hairdressing industry was just starting to bubble with a yet-to-be-seen level of creativity. Quickly progressing in his career, Tyler then became Art Director for a prestigious London Salon. After six years of honing his technical expertise in this high-profile position – whilst also working on seasonal fashion collections and TV commercials – he made the transition into full-time freelance work, firmly establishing himself as one of the industry’s most sought-after session stylists.

Originally from Manchester, Tyler brings a street-based attitude and adventurous creativity to his work, which sees him creating strong styles that fuse both the refined beauty of cutting-edge fashion with the rawness of the contemporary urban scene. Although often surrounded by a celebrity lifestyle, Tyler remains completely grounded, citing “imperfections” and “realness” as great sources of inspiration for his work.

"Real is what interests and inspires me; it’s the thread that runs through my life and my work…"

– Tyler Johnston

As Schwarzkopf Professional's Global Editorial Ambassador, Tyler has his finger firmly on the pulse of upcoming trends and viral movements. Combined with his global travels as a freelance session stylist, he is able to look at the bigger fashion picture to truly translate tomorrow's trends into today's reality.

This is why his styling advice and hair expertise is widely called upon by a number of Schwarzkopf Professional's brands; recently he worked behind-the-scenes with tbh – true beautiful honest, where he created a photo-ready authentic finish that perfectly showcased the brand's multidimensional color assortment.

Tyler is also present at the Essential Looks model castings where he supports the team in finding the right models for each look, he carefully assesses the models' hair quality and overall suitability for a specific makeover, taking into consideration the color requirements as well as styling. As part of the process Tyler also shares input on the latest global trends he’s seen at fashion weeks and from the celebrity world, but where he really comes into his element is translating those trends into cut and finish techniques that hairdressers can actually recreate in their own salons, for their own clients – which is the essence of Essential Looks.
